John Dowland (존 다우랜드, 1563-1626) 영국 아니면 아일랜드 태생인 존 다울랜드는 셰익스피어와 같은 영국 Lute음악의 전성기인 Elizabeth 왕조시대 활약했던 인물로 1563년에 아마도 런던에서 태어났다. 그는 뛰어난 류트 주자 였지만 들리는바로는 그가 카톨릭 교도 였기때문에 왕실의 직책을 얻지는 못했고 그의 사회적 신분을 추구해서 해외로 나갔는데 Kassel 과 그리고 더 보다 이후에는 덴마크 Christian 4세 왕실에 까지 갔다. 그는 빛에 쪼들려 1606년 영국으로 돌아오게되고 결국 1612년 왕의 류트 주자들 중 한명으로 임명을 받게되었다. 그는 왕인 제임스 1세의 장례식에서 연주를 했고 그 이듬해에는 그 자신이 사망하게 되었다.다울랜드는 이시기 가장 유명한 노래들 가운데 하나인 melancholy 를 작곡한 작곡가였다.다울랜드 스스로가 자신의 이름에 동음이의어의 어구를 쓴 적절한 말귀를 썼다.
